I pieced this quilted wall hanging entirely out of my stash of
scraps and fabric remnants. When choosing fabrics most of the fabrics
should be ones that are either tone on tones, or fabrics that have a
pattern that is not a large or medium-scale print. You will want to look
for small-scale floral prints, tone-on-tones, small-scale geometic
prints - prints that read to a large degree as a solid. I will
tell you what to think of where it will help in choosing your fabrics.
--Backing and outermost border - 3/4 yard (I used the same fabric
for both of these. You can wait to choose this until after
the quilt top is together.
--Fabric for inner border and sashing between block - 1/8 to 1/4 yard
(You will find it easier to have the full width of the fabric
for this. I used a dark blue geometric print for this.)
--light green - 4"x4"
--medium green - 1 FQ or assorted scraps
--dark green - 4"x4"
**Note: the greens should blend and shade with each other.
--sky blue (think 'sky')- 1/2 yard
--light grey - fat 1/8th
--medium grey - 2"x2"
--3 scraps of brown that shade together from lite to dark -
3"x2" scrap
--dark brown - fat 1/8th or a little more, this should work
well with the 3 shades of brown above, think 'wood'
and 'dirt'
--orange - 2"x2"
--dark rust or red - 3"x3"
--med rust or red - 5"x5"
--dark rust or red - 7"x7"
--a small scale floral print that will go well with the rust/red and
the dark brown and 'sky' - 2"x2"
--7 different scraps in colors such as yellow, red, and pinks. Think
'flowers' - I used 7 different reds and pinks.
--med red - 2"x2"
--dark blue - 12"x5"
--white or natural - 6"x6"
--small scale floral print - 5"x7" (I used a dark green floral on
beige print)
--a dark color "reads as solid" to match the 5"x7" print above(I used
a dark green for this)
--1-1" black button
--3-5/8" dark buttons that will look good with the small-scale floral
print above (I used dk. green)
--assorted small floral appliques or buttons - 5 or 6
**Note: if the fabrics look good together then there should be no problem
in using them together in the blocks.
